Topic: Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Exams are one of the important factors that enable students to learn. Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.
Tests are inevitable things that students have to face. They enable students to evaluate themselves as to how much they have studied, and also to make them realize what careers and majors to choose. However, when students study for tests, the way that they study prohibits the details to remain permanently inside their head. So, exams don’t actually encourage students to learn, but merely memorize all of the facts. Also, exams aren’t a true test of knowledge. A student can do just perfect without a vast knowledge, when he or she has a good memory.
Firstly, the details and facts students study for tests only lasts for a short period of time. The method that students use when they have to prepare for a test is usually skimming, which is generally fast reading and memorizing. This can be a useful method when you have to study a lot of material during a short period. However, it doesn’t mean that the things that you have gone through can last permanently. It would gradually disappear as time passes by. The reason is that when students skim through the words, they usually don’t fully comprehend the overall idea. Also, they tend to only memorize information that is needed for the exams, so they wouldn’t care about researching and analyzing. Thus, studying for the purpose of taking exams wouldn’t be the best way to learn.
Secondly, exams don’t truly judge a student’s knowledge. Anybody can get a good grade when he or she memorizes every bit of information. Obviously, to do that, he or she should have a great short term memory capacity. So, students who have a better memory will be able to get a higher score than the students who are actually more clever. For example, Einstein was not considered as a clever student when he was young. However, after years, he became renowned as one of the most important scientist of history. Thus, exams are simply a way that judges a one’s memory, instead of testing one’s studying skills and knowledge.
In conclusion, studying for exams is not a beneficial way in order to learn something. Students would likely forget what they have studied after the exam. Also, exams actually are not an effective way to evaluate the potential ability of students. Cramming and pressure from the tests don’t allow pupils to learn. It only tests their memory, rather than enhance what they need to know.
