Topic: Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Classmates have more influence on a child’s success in school than parents do. Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.
Both friends and parents are capable of influencing a child. They both are powerful source of making a difference on one’s personality, or the way he or she thinks. We are influenced by parents in our homes, since the beginning of our life. They teach us the basic knowledge of the world, including basic manners and courtesy. However, in my opinion, as we get older, friends could rise as a stronger influence in one’s life.
The first reason is that classmates could be better people who can truly understand you. When you are unstable during puberty and don’t know where you have to go, friends are always near you to reach out a hand to help. Comprehending your mind could be easier work for friends, because they are about the same age as you are. They are able to understand better, since they are also in a similar situation as yours, while parents could misunderstand your mind’s position.
Secondly, as time passes by, friends become more reliable and believable in one’s mind to lean on. As children grow up, a mind to be independent from their parents springs up. They tend to spend more time with their friends, rather than being with their parents. Various activities occur more frequently, as children interact with classmates through school. For instance, as my elder brother actually lives with his school friends, since he is in a dormitory, he became very independent from our parents. Nowadays, he is fond of paying a considerable amount of attention to his friends. Like this, friends could eventually be a more reliable source for one to believe, thus being influential.
To sum up, I agree that classmates have more influence on a person’s success in school than parents do. Classmates understand a person’s mind better than parents can. Also, older children tend to rely more on their friends and get along with them as they get older. On the whole, I think classmates are friends who can greatly change your life.
